I had every intention of waking up and going for a walk today. It was sunny and lovely and definitely walking weather. That being said, I hate my phone.
The two are connected, I swear.
My phone is through Virgin Mobile. I'm grandfathered into the plan, so I only pay their $25/month currently. If I upgrade my phone, I'm afraid I'll be stuck with their new bill of $35/month. Yes, it's only a $10 difference. But still. I like my cheap cell service! I get reception practically everywhere and I have free everything except minute and, really, who needs more minutes these days? Yay for text messages! But for the past 6 months or so my phone will go into this mode where it's "updating software." At least, that's what it's suppose to be doing. In reality, it's just sitting in ideal, sucking the battery life (even though it's plugged in it's not actually charging), and not letting my alarm go off or collect text messages. Thus my cellphone hatred.
So. It went into update mode (and to get out of this mode, I have to remove the battery and restart the phone. It left me with 6% battery life) and left me sleeping. I'm lucky I have a roommate because there's no way anyone could have really gotten a hold of me, otherwise. She woke me up with an, "Aren't you suppose to work tonight?" knock on my door. I cussed and sweared and hopped in the shower for a quick scrub. My roomie is best because she packed my lunch (which I thanked her for profusely). I was out the door in about 10 minutes after waking and was only about a minute late for work.
I guess that means I have to go for a walk when I get home in the morning.
Cheers!

Saturday March 29, 2014 -- Rest
The hike yesterday left my leg muscles sore but not my butt muscles, which is what I was thinking based on all the hills we went up and down yesterday. It mainly aches on the outside of my knees, where the the upper and lower legs meet. But otherwise, I'm in pretty good shape -- better than I was expecting!
Here's to a day of rest and a day of work. I'll be back on a walk on Sunday. I'm exhausted today because they changed our schedules around at work, a bit. For this week and next week, I will be working three hours earlier than I usually do. You'd think this wouldn't be a big deal with sleep but boy-howdy! Plus, I've got our neighbors playing video games and sitting in their cars, idling, with their bass up as loud as it can go (to the point my bookcases shake). Good times, Saturdays.
Cheers!

Friday March 28, 2014 -- Hike
On Tuesday night, I thought to myself that I wanted to go on a hike. The problem with then became it was March in Washington. Which means there's snow in them-thar mountains and all the roads leading to my normal hikes were blocked. Add to that, I don't do snow.
So I went on to the Washington Trail Association website and started looking. They've got a Google map with all of the hikes they know of laid out. You just find the area you're looking to hike and it'll tell you what's there.
I eventually decided I'd like to hike the Oyster Dome. I texted my sister's husband's sister, Jamie, and she was all for going with me on Friday.
Fast-forward . . . We met at my apartment on Friday morning. We first headed to Haggen to get some trail munchies then to my storage unit to get my hiking boots (I have to have ankle support -- too many rolled ankles in my time) and trail backpack.
As we left Haggen, the skies opened up and let lose a torrent of rain. As we headed north, it calmed. When we took the Chuckanut Drive exit, there weren't any drips hitting our windshield.
We drove and drove and drove through the twists and turns. At one point we thought we may have passed the trail-head but we didn't see any signs or any Discovery Passes in the car windows so we just kept heading north, since we didn't know where we were suppose to go. We eventually crossed the line into Whatcom County and there was Larrabee State Park on our right.
Since we were somewhat lost we decided to go talk to the ranger at the station. He told us our first suspicions were right -- those cars were right at the trail-head for Oyster Dome. He then told us about Fragrance Lake. The start of the trail to get there was just here in the parking lot. Since we were already here and we were wanting to get going we decided to do the Fragrance Lake hike. We took the ranger's advice and started the trail by going up the old fire and logging road. I couldn't imagine trying to drive a car up here! The ground was saturated but there weren't many potholes or mud puddles.
A bit after our halfway mark we came upon a waterfall. I'm glad we did this hike in the early spring! If we were to do it in the late summer, I doubt there would be as much of a flow as we were treated to.
Cheers!

(me at the base of the waterfall; taken with my phone)
I love waterfalls!!! They are one of my favorite things and I love scaling the hills and rocks surrounding them to get up to the top. I think I was a mountain goat in a past life or something. I scrambled up the left side, almost to the top. I love it when the water splashes on your face. And it felt very refreshing after our huff and puff up the trail.
The lake wasn't as special as the waterfall and the switchbacks coming down weren't at all fun on bodies. I wish I had brought hiking poles (my next investment!).
As we were walking back through the parking lot at the end our our journey, it started sprinkling. We got in the car and headed south and it started down pouring! We timed this entire expedition exceptionally, even if it was all about getting lost. All-in-all, we went about 5.5 miles.
I'm excited for next Friday -- I'm hoping to keep up the habit and hike every Friday until Fall (maybe I'll even do some winter hikes! We'll see how much I'm willing to invest in gear).

Thursday March 27, 2014 -- Missed
I didn't do anything today, either.
My bad.
But tomorrow I've got a plan for a hike to Oyster Dome on Chuckanut Drive. It'll be great! I've never done any hiking out there so I'm really very excited.
I did, however, have a good girls-night with my roomie and my friend Nichole. We laughed so hard I think we all pulled something.
Cheers!

Wednesday March 26, 2014 -- Rest
Today was a day of rest. I debated on if I needed it or not and decided I really did. Even though my half marathon hike is coming up soon, I can't be burning myself out at the beginning.
I think that's been my main problem -- I start my "training" gung-ho on working out every day and then I crash and burn after my first "rest" day.
Cheers!

Tuesday March 25, 2014 -- Walk/Jog
I didn't want to get out of bed today.
I woke up around 6:30 PM and my roomie wasn't home. I texted her and she said she wouldn't be home for out walk. So, me being me, I decided to roll over and go back to bed for an hour. I kidded myself and said, "I'll wake up and do 30 minutes on the treadmill instead of the hour walking."
My neighbors had a different idea, though. They started playing mariachi music (or something very similar) and I could not get back to sleep. I also sneaked a look at my phone. Facebook told me I'd had about 10 different people like my post about working out... So I felt like I had some people to impress (thus the logic behind making me "publicly" accountable. Perform for the people, Lisa! Get a move on!).
Since I was awake anyway and there was no way of getting back to bed with all the thumping that accompanied the mariachi music, I got out of bed, changed into my leggings, shirt, sweater, and running shoes, and had two glasses of water, and headed out the door.
I took videos before and at the end of my walk today. I haven't a clue how to upload them onto blogger, though, so we'll see if they ever actually make it on here in future posts.
While I was filming the first video, rain drops decided to make an appearance. It was gloomy looking and wet and windy so I was thinking to myself that I should have grabbed a rain slicker.
Up the hill I went and on the music came. I decided to start jogging after the first hill, since I didn't want to be out anyway and thought I would get my one mile done faster if I did. I jogged for about three songs (and almost the rest of the mile) and then walked until I came to the steep hill. I jogged up that and kept left. I'd decided it wasn't too cold or windy or rainy (I hadn't felt any drops since that first video) and I could do the same route as yesterday. I jogged past the new middle school to the big hill, walked down the hill to the end of the elementary school (it would be hilarious to see me rolling down the hill in an attempted run), and then jogged the long stretch on French Street. That last little bit I really, really didn't want to do. So I ran -- I widened my strides, breathed deeper, and ran. And then I walked the rest of the way home.
It was a good jog and I'm glad a rolled out of bed today to do it. When I got home I did my planks (two times at 15 seconds), crunches (two sets of 15), and I did three variations of squats (regular, tight, and sumo -- 5 each).
And I even had time to make some banana/peanut butter/chocolate chip muffins. They turned out alright, even without flour.
Now I'm at work and just have to make it through the rest of the night. It's my Friday, after all!
TGIF!
Cheers!

Google's Pretty Cool
If you want to compare the nutritional value of "kale vs. bacon," you can.
Just type it into Google: "Compare: kale vs. bacon."
Seriously. I'll wait.
What's this, you say? It's given you an awesome chart with pretty pictures and beautiful lines and wonderful information?
Why, yes, it has!
That's because Google's pretty cool.
You're welcome.
Cheers!

Monday March 24, 2014 -- Walk
My roommate thought we should go for a walk today. I'm glad we did. Almost as soon as we started walking, a warm breeze blew past us both and we each gasped and leaned into it. We would have missed it entirely if we'd just stayed at home and had a snooze (for me) and some TV or extra work (for her).
We ended up walking about 2 miles, all told. We met up with her mom and we had a cute little posse of chatty women out for a stroll. Her mom only walked for about 1 mile with us before calling it, which is totally fine. We did that in about 24 minutes and 24 minutes for the second mile. The last one, we jogged up a steep hill (the first go-round the blocks, we walked down it). We were winded and a bit sweaty by the time we made it back to the apartment. Since my roomie encouraged me to jog, I told her she had to do squats (five squats twice), planks (15 seconds twice), and sit-ups/crunches (15 twice) with me.
My roomie then declared herself evil and wanted to repent of her vile and cruel ways.
I accepted her repentance but we still did the sets. They took about ten minutes. She wanted me to do bicycle crunches, which I've not mastered ever (my coordination is horrible!). I stuck to my regular crunches and I'm glad I did . . . 8 hours later and I can feel my muscles every time I pull this way and that way. It's a good pull, not a sore pull. We'll see how she's feeling when I get home and she's had a full night's sleep.
I've decided we're going to stick with this routine, now that spring has graced our side of the country with it's glorious days. We'll go everyday, rain or shine:
- 6:00 PM -- roomie comes home; dinner or a snack for my roomie
- 6:30 PM -- stretched, dressed, watered, and ready to go walking/jogging
- 7:30 PM -- walk is over, start strength training exercises
- 7:45 PM -- "breakfast" for me; shower and get ready for work
- 8:45 PM -- leave for work; roomie is off to bed
I'm hoping I'll be able to upload videos before, during or after walks.
Cheers!

That First One . . .
This blog is going to be dedicated to health and wellness. Particularly mine but feel free to use things I write about or look into places/events I'm going to/doing.
Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a wretchedly bumpy ride.
My first attempt at blogging can be found on The CountDown. It became too big (in my head, if not in the blogosphere). For my peace of mind, I've categorized my blogs separately (so far we're on two but lordy only knows how many more I will subject you to!). It makes sense to me and that's all that really matters, right?
So. What follows is an accounting of my search along the path of health and wellness.
Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a wretchedly bumpy ride.
Cheers!
